Community Car Scheme

Tees Valley Rural Community Council (TVRCC) are now rolling out a new Community Car Scheme using Volunteer Drivers aimed at those most in need of transport, vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals. Our passengers are usually over 60 years old, registered disabled or have been referred to us by Social Services or another caring agencies.

As this is a new pilot scheme it will take some time to establish a pool of volunteer drivers in each locality. The pilot will serve rural and urban areas in the Tees Valley, will provide transport to help combat social isolation in more remote parts of the Tees Valley. To ensure the success of the service, organisers of the project, which is managed through Tees Valley Rural Community Council, are appealing for volunteerís car drivers who are willing to offer lifts to assist individuals, drivers will be paid 45p a mile by the passenger.

Most journeys are relatively local and provide those individuals travel examples of journeys are as follows: Hospital appointments, visits to doctorís surgeries, dental, opticianís appointments, luncheon clubs and day centres.

We aim to provide all passengers with confidence in our service; therefore we will be asking all of our drivers to complete our application process with entails DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, 2 character references and driver identification cards. We also ask that our drivers are in good health and have driving experience of at least 2 years.

All passengers will be issued with membership cards (after the initial pilot period) this costs £5 per annum and allows unlimited access to the service for 12 months. Also there is a mileage cost of 45p a mile to be paid to the driver. The cost of the journey will be pre arranged at TVRCC, the driver and the passenger will be notified of time and cost.

TVRCC would require a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to the journey required, to allow for driver scheduling.
